Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School has a rich history tied to the 19th-century growth of the Catholic community in North London.

19th-Century Foundations (1870s)

Parish Origins: Sacred Heart Mission was established in the Holloway area in 1870. Following the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales, parish schools were founded alongside new churches to educate local Catholic working-class families.

Creation of the School: By 1879, an elementary parish school attached to the Church of the Sacred Heart was formally operating. It provided affordable education, funded by small subscriptions and parish collections.

Early 20th Century & Growth

Voluntary Aided Status: Following the Balfour Education Act of 1902 and the handover of London schools to the London County Council (LCC) in 1904, Catholic voluntary schools like Sacred Heart became part of the state-supported system while retaining their Catholic governance.

Parish Expansion: The nearby Church of the Sacred Heart on Eden Grove was formally consecrated in May 1928, establishing deep roots for the school community alongside the parish.

World War II: Like many North London schools, Sacred Heart experienced disruptions during the Blitz, including temporary pupil evacuations to rural areas outside London.

Expansion and Modern Two-Site Campus

Georges Road Base: The main primary school premises established their permanent presence at Georges Road, Holloway.

2015 Extension: To accommodate growing demand in Islington, the school expanded to operate across two sites. In 2015, a new facility at the nearby St Margaret Mary site opened to house Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. The main Georges Road building continues to serve Early Years, Key Stage 1, and lower Key Stage 2. The annexe is named after St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the 17th-century French Roman Catholic nun and mystic whose visions established the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus—tying the facility directly to the Catholic heritage and ethos of the school and parish. The school and church share the community centre. 

Present Day

Today, Sacred Heart operates as a Voluntary Aided primary school within the Diocese of Westminster and Islington Local Authority
