The Sacred Heart is one of the most loved devotions in the Catholic Church. It represents:

Jesus’ unconditional love for every person

Compassion, mercy and forgiveness

A heart that is open to all, especially the vulnerable

A call to love others as Christ loves us

 

The image of the Sacred Heart often shows:

A heart surrounded by flames (symbolising burning love)

A crown of thorns (Christ’s suffering for humanity)

A cross rising from the heart (His sacrifice)

Light shining from the heart (His divine love)

St Margaret Mary Alacoque

St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690) was a French nun who received visions of Jesus revealing His Sacred Heart. She is known for:

Her deep prayer life

Her message that Jesus’ heart burns with love for all people

Encouraging devotion to the Sacred Heart

Inspiring the tradition of First Fridays and Holy Hours
