Curriculum Intent
At Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, we are committed to providing rich, meaningful learning experiences that inspire success across every area of the curriculum while nurturing each child’s personal, emotional and spiritual growth. Our Christian values underpin all that we do. Through our ‘3‑5‑7’ ethos, our Catholic identity and our holistic approach to education, we aim to equip every child with the knowledge, skills and cultural capital they need to flourish in the wider world and meet the demands of life in the 21st century.
Our curriculum journey begins in the Early Years, where children learn through a carefully balanced blend of structured teaching and purposeful play across the seven areas of development. We maintain high‑quality continuous provision throughout Reception and into Year 1, ensuring that children continue to learn through exploration, investigation and hands‑on experiences while gradually increasing the level of structure and challenge. This approach supports a smooth, developmentally appropriate transition from Early Years into more formal learning, strengthened further by our use of the Early Excellence model.
Across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, we deliver a knowledge‑rich curriculum that aligns with the National Curriculum and reflects our school’s distinctive vision. We believe that secure knowledge forms the foundation for strong skills—for example, fluency in number bonds and times tables enables pupils to confidently tackle increasingly complex mathematical concepts. Our curriculum is fully inclusive and accessible to all, in line with the Equality Act 2010 and the SEND Regulations 2014.
To promote deep and lasting learning, each subject is taught through carefully sequenced units that break down larger concepts into smaller, manageable steps. This structured progression enables pupils to build strong subject knowledge, make meaningful connections and retain learning over time. Direct instruction is a key element of our teaching approach, providing clarity, consistency and high expectations for all staff.
Language development is central to our curriculum. Many pupils join us with limited vocabulary or speaking experience, so developing strong oracy skills is a priority across all subjects. We want children to communicate confidently and articulate their learning clearly. Early reading, vocabulary development and high‑quality phonics teaching are essential drivers of success across the curriculum.
Our inclusive vision is reflected in our targeted support for disadvantaged pupils, guided by our Pupil Premium Strategy with a focus on reading, vocabulary and communication. Pupils with SEND receive tailored support that equips them with the knowledge and skills needed for future learning.
We are committed to establishing Strong Foundations from Nursery to Year 2, ensuring that all children develop secure early language, reading, writing and mathematical skills. This strong start underpins future learning and sets pupils up for long‑term success.
Learning is further enriched through a wide range of cultural, creative and real‑world experiences, both locally and nationally. These opportunities broaden horizons, build confidence and deepen pupils’ understanding of the world around them.
SMSC development is woven throughout our curriculum—not only through PSHCE and RE, but also through sport, the arts, performance opportunities, community projects and early exposure to the world of work. These experiences help pupils develop resilience, confidence and strength of character.
Ultimately, our curriculum aims to shape compassionate, thoughtful and well‑rounded young people who embody British Values and make a positive contribution to society.
