We created our own tin forest!

We hot steated in pairs to develop our understanding of the old man in Helen Ward's 'The Tin Forest'

We have been writing character descriptions based on David Almond's 'Skellig'.

Year Five have been acting out our current text, 'The Silver Sword', in order to help our recall.

Check out these mouthwatering Trinidadian menus! The children combined their retrieval and descriptive writing skills to produce this amazing work based on our class text, Floella Benjamin's 'Coming to England'.

In Reading, we have been analysing the different characters' behaviour and emotions using a conscious alley.

Windrush Poetry based on John Agard's 'Windrush Child'

Coming to England

To celebrate Black History Month, Year Five have been reading 'Coming to England' by Floella Benjamin. When Floella Benjamin first came to England from Trinidad in the early sixties, she hadn't seen her parents for fifteen months. At first, her joy at being reunited with her mother overcomes the shock at her new surroundings in cold, noisy London but when she starts school she is upset by the taunting and rejection she faces. Determined to survive, Floella realises that the only way is to be twice as good as everyone else. Check out all of our amazing work!

 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Year Five have loved reading their class text, Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, despite how hungry it made us all feel.

In English, we have written newspaper reports announcing Charlie finding his golden ticket. Check out these great examples!

Year Five have also developed their performing skills by learning one of the Oompa Loompa's poems and performing them to the class. Have a look at this clip!
