Topic (Geography, History, Art and Design Technology)

Welcome to Topic at Sacred Heart!

Topic is made up of four subjects:

Geography, History, Art and Design and Technology.

Geography:

Our Geography curriculum engages children in the study of the wider world, people, places & the environment. Children need to have a knowledge of the world – oceans, continents, major countries & cities, human and physical geography and the environment.

History

Our history curriculum traces British history and the great civilisations of the world. We aim to provide pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to appreciate our history and that of human creativity, endeavour & exploration through time.

Art

We want our children to be creative, confident in the use of colour and different artistic mediums. Pupils need to develop their artistic skills in drawing, painting, printing, modelling, designing, 3D techniques, digital art and an appreciation of artists through confident creativity.

Design Technology

We want our pupils to use a broad range of skills and understanding to design and make products that solve real & relevant problems in a variety of contexts. Pupils need to use a variety of materials to make products and evaluate their effectiveness.

Topic drives our thematic curriculum at Sacred Heart. We believe that fostering children's creativity and engagement through engaging sessions in and inspired through Topic has a huge impact on their ability to succeed academically, socially, emotionally and culturally. This strong commitment to creativity and culture has led to Sacred Heart being awarded the Artsmark Gold Award, something we are exceptionally proud of!

Children take part in Topic sessions each week, following a skills based, creative scheme of work developed by our Topic leader, Miss Spillman. Our teachers use a 'progression in skills' document which helps them cater the scheme to individual classes and children. In addition to our weekly sessions, Topic provides us lots of opportunities for experiencing one of our 5 keys, 'curiosity and wonder', extending our learning beyond the curriculum requirements.
