Telling the time to 5 minutes

Our next topic is time! We will consolidate our learning of o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to and begin to look at 5 minute intervals.

Fractions!

Today we learnt that fractions are an equal part of a whole and what their representations are like within shapes! We labelled which fractions had been shaded, shaded our own fractions and reasoned about what we found out, commenting on whether people were correct or incorrect and why.

Multiplication and Division

We have now moved on to recapping how to multiply and divide using formal methods. For multiplication we use the column method and for division we use the bus stop method!

Addition and Subtraction

We begun by recapping our addition skills and using the formal column method to help us add!

During the first couple of weeks of Summer Term 1, we will be revisiting and consolidating our knowledge and understanding of formal methods to add and subtract, as well as developing our reasoning skills.

Partitioning

Now we are moving on to recapping place value and investigating the value of each digit in different numbers. We started with finding 10 more/less and 100 more/less then a 2 and 3 digit number. We then recapped partitioning using a standard and non-standard format, before moving to using a number line to plot different numbers.

Time

Over the course of this week, we have been recapping how to tell the time. We started with recapping the basics o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to and then moved on to telling the time in 5 minute intervals. They did really well, especially getting to grips with 5 past!

Shapes

We are starting the term by recapping 2D shapes and their properties! Including, sides, corners (vertices) and the size of the angles-obtuse and acute.  We will also be moving onto looking at 3D shapes and their properties as well.

Multiplication and Division

In Maths we have been looking at the formal method of multiplying using the column method. The children have been using their times table knowledge to help with this.

In our Spring term, we will move on to division by grouping and sharing before we move into the formal 'bus stop' method.

Times tables

Times tables are a very important part of our practise at Sacred Heart and they will help your chid increase their speed and accuracy in Maths lessons so that they can really get stuck into problem solving and reasoning challenges!

Have fun!

Estimating

This week we have been trying our hardest to estimate and round numbers to the nearest 10. We have been using 100 squares and number lines to help find our 'near number' in order to help us estimate. Today we had our own number lines and marker pens to make sure we found the correct numbers. Well done Year 3!

Addition and Subtraction

We have recently begun our work on addition and subtraction and the children are already proving they are using what they learnt in prior weeks to help them, well done!

We will begin by recapping our KS1 knowledge of adding and subtracting 1 and 2 digit numbers before moving on to 3 digit numbers. We are beginning to use the column method, as shown below, as well as number lines and drawings to represent our numbers and help us calculate our answers. Keep up the good work!

Place Value

The children have been investigating how numbers are formed and how to partition them. In year 3 we will be in working with ones, tens, hundreds and thousands and the children have been working really hard to ensure they can recognise, order and compare different numbers. Well done!
